How to talk to a loved one about in- home care services
It is crucial to have a conversation as early as possible before any cognitive and or physical changes start to negatively impact an aging adult and or a senior’s quality of life.
As we age it might become more challenging to perform daily activities due to various factors. It can be declining health in general, chronic health issues, diseases and or cognitive impairment such as Dementia. Some seniors remain more independent than others.
Start with doing your ‘homework’ to gain a better understanding of a loved one's status of their independence, health situation and current care needs. If possible, discuss & research financial resources including the market value of the home or condo they live at.
If you have siblings and a large family, ensure that everyone is on the same page in the way they want to help the person in need in the most impactful and respectful way. First speak to other adult members of your family to discuss any possible alarming signs you or one of them might have noticed such as forgetfulness/memory loss, confusion, health problems, lack of hygiene, loss of weight, depression etc.
Make a plan and have a strategy with a list of options. Find the right time to arrange a light conversation and avoid being controlling, argumentative and or parenting a loved one.
Instead, ask simple questions to learn more about their wishes.
For example, inquire if the place where the loved one (s) currently lives is actually the place they wish to age in place. Are there any plans and or arrangements that have been already made? Listen to their wishes and be respectful. Show your concerns and express the importance of the person’s and your peace of mind for the future. How will they manage?
You could ask about mobility and or needs for transportation and their openness about assistance in their home. How do they manage at home? Are they any fall risks and mobility issues? Is there something you noticed which is concerning you in regards to their health, safety or mobility? Build on the established trust which will help you to gain credibility as a partner in a loved one’s well-being.
Make a list and repeat their wishes which will help you to increase the trust. There are also cultural values that each family needs to consider as it has an impact on a loved one’s wishes, plans and care
Further, express your concern that you want the person aging independently as long as possible wherever they choose their aging environment. Discuss in which environment the person would be most comfortable, safe and happy. Stay positive and embrace helping a loved one on their journey.
