How seniors can lower health risks

As we age, we become more vulnerable to chronic health issues, illnesses & diseases. Seniors' immune system is weaker and not always able to fight off infections as effectively as before. As many viruses circulate widely (cold & influenza), fall & winter is a critical times for older adults. Seniors who already suffer from any chronic health issues or disease and have decreased or no mobility,  are also at very high risk of falls & injury, which can develop into further health & mobility complications. Keep in mind that any cold or flu infection can progress to pneumonia, a serious disease that can be deadly if not medically treated right away.

Below are some helpful tips for seniors & loved ones:

Ensure you are vaccinated

With the fall and the flu season approaching, the health officials recommend being fully Covid-19 vaccinated, including the first booster shot. Seniors also need to be registered to receive a fall booster update invitation. If you are registered, over 65, and are moderate to severely immunocompromised (experience critical health issues) invitations continue to be sent out. Seniors in long-term care & assisted living have already been offered their booster dose. Keep wearing a face mask

Although wearing a face mask is no longer mandatory, it's recommended especially in public places. Keep in mind that most people now no longer keep the Covid 19-recommended distance and sick people can come close to you spreading a virus. Protect yourself, especially in all busy public places such as grocery stores, community/seniors centers, libraries, etc.

Continue frequent hand washing & hand sanitizing routine

Keep washing your hands frequently, especially when you get back home. Carry a hand sanitizer on you at all times as some hand sanitizer stations at busy places can run out. Sanitize your shopping cart at grocery stores

Stay physically active!

Ensure a low-impact healthy physical activity for about 20 minutes per day depending on your mobility status. If your mobility should be impaired, consult your physician, or health authority to get an in-home care assessment.

Private home care companies also offer a free home care assessment. Choosing a private home care service will be of great benefit for seniors who need help with activities of daily living, such as walking, personal care, meal prep/cooking, companionship, and transportation to medical appointments. It's reliable, flexible, and offers many benefits including remaining longer independent & safe at home.

Stay socially active

Prevent isolation by staying socially active with family and or friends. Many seniors suffer from Depression which can lead to additional overall decline as it impacts functioning and maintaining a healthy routine & lifestyle. Visit a seniors center close by regularly to socialize and lift your spirit

Maintain a healthy diet & drink lots of water

Avoid fatty foods, sugar & salt, and a lower caffeine & alcohol intake. Choose a healthy diet and nourish your body with vitamin-rich foods. Drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water/day even if you are not thirsty.

Keep busy with a hobby!

Maintain or choose a hobby that keeps you active and busy. Reading, listening to music, etc. can be very helpful in promoting your quality of life.

Stimulate your cognitive skills! Engage in crossword puzzles or any board games that stimulate cognitive capabilities.

Stay positive! Having a positive attitude goes a long way & and is a natural antidepressant.

Reach out when you need companionship or help
- stay virtually and connected and in person.
